Biological effects of radiation


·         Stochastic effects:
o   Probability of the radiation effects increases with dose
o   Cancer (e.g. Leukaemia); genetic effects
o   No difference in severity after disease occurs with increasing dose
o   No threshold dose below which risk ceases to exist
o   Regarded as the principal health risk form low-dose radiation
·         Deterministic effects:
o   Severity of the injury increases with dose
o   Require much higher doses to produce effect
o   E.g. Cataracts; erythema; fibrosis; haemopoietic damage
o   There exists a threshold below which the effect is not seen
